Yoga and Yogis: the history and practices of traditional yoga
With Jim Mallinson & Dominic West
Location: Sag Harbor
Level: Open (all students welcome)
Cost: $40 for the evening (come to one or both parts)
Join Jim Mallinson, a scholar-practitioner of traditional yoga, for a talk on the history and practices of the yogic traditions. In this talk he will summarize his new findings, with a particular emphasis on yoga’s physical practices. The talk will be illustrated with his own photographs as well as many Mughal and other historical depictions of yogis.
The talk will be followed by a Q & A session and then a screening of Mystical Journey: Kumbh Mela, a 46-minute film made by the Smithsonian TV Channel which tells the story of Jim’s journey with actor Dominic West to last year’s Kumbh Mela bathing festival on the banks of the Ganges in India, where Jim was honored by his sect with the title of mahant (a cross between an abbot and a military commander). Jim will then answer questions about the film.
7:00pm: Lecture with Jim Mallinson followed by Q&A and short break
8:30pm: Film screening followed by discussion
Jim Mallinson is the lecturer in Sanskrit at SOAS, University of London, and his academic research focusses on Sanskrit texts on yoga. Uniquely in the field, he has also spent many years in India living with traditional yogis. This combination of rigorous textual scholarship and deep immersion in traditional yoga culture has led him to rewrite the history of yoga and yogis, and he is recognised by the academic community as the world’s leading authority on the subject.
