Cost: $25 per workshop
We are excited that Richard Rosen is teaching three advanced yoga workshops this month on Mondays May 9th, 16th and 23rd! These workshops will happen over Zoom, which means that you must attend the class live at the scheduled time as it will not automatically be available for 24hr re-streaming once it ends. Students can attend one or all three workshops. $25 per workshop.
Week One: Monday, May 9th
Hatha Ratna Avali (String of Pearls on Hatha [Yoga]) 17th century
Focus poses: Mayurasana (Peacock) and its variations; Vrshcikasana (Scorpion, yoga chair highly recommended); Dhanurasana (Bow, today called Akarna Dhanurasana, To the Ear Bow).
Breathing practice: Step Breathing (aka Viloma pranayama, Against the Grain); Ujjayi pranayama (Conqueror), with vrtti (ratio) counting, both using circular breath, and Ajapa Mantra (Whispered Mantra).
Props required: 2 blocks; at least 1 yoga belt; at least 3 blankets.
Also recommended: yoga chair; at least one sandbag; bolster
Week Two: Monday, May 16th
Hatha Abhyasa Paddhati (Guidebook for Hatha Practice) 18th century
Focus poses: Tiryak Naukasana (Oblique Boat, today called Shoulder Stand, 3 blankets minimum required as shoulder support for this and next two poses); Dhvajasana (Flag, today called Parshva Sarvangasana, Sideways Shoulder Stand); Langalasana (Plow); Narakasana (Hell, today called Headstand); Vetrasana (Reed, today called Setukasana, Bridge); Paryankasana (Couch, today called Urdhva Dhanurasana, Upward Bow).
Breathing practice: Kapalabhati (Skull Brightener); Ujjayi, with yoga strap around bottom ribs for circular breath; Pratyahara (Withdrawal, in the Hatha tradition), breathing into the 18 stations.
Props required: 2 blocks; at least 1 yoga belt; at least 3 blankets.
Also recommended: yoga chair; at least one sandbag; bolster.
Week Three: Monday, May 23rd
Shri Tattva Nidhi (Blessed Treasure of Reality) 19th century
Focus poses: Standing poses. Vrkshasana (Tree); Shankvasana (Arrow); Utpidasana (Press); Ushtrasana (Camel)*; Dhruvasana (Pole Star); Kapotasana (Pigeon)*; Musalasana (Pestle); Ardha Candrasana (Half Moon)*; Alingasana (Embracer); Balalingasana (Child Hug); Kulala Cakrasana (Potter’s Wheel). NOTE: the names of the starrred asanas today designate different poses.
Breathing practice: Short focus on Jalandhara Bandha (Net Holding Bond); Ujjayi, with Kumbhaka (literally “pot-like,” i.e. breath retention).
Props required: 2 blocks; at least 1 yoga belt; at least 3 blankets.
Also recommended: yoga chair; at least one sandbag; bolster.
